Housebuilding

  • Opposition to housebuilding is a minority in every seat in Great Britain. A majority of voters support housebuilding or have no view either way.
  • It is worth noting, however, that sometimes small pockets of opposition can mobilise through the planning system.
  • Of the top 20 seats with the highest levels of opposition, 8 were gained by Labour at the 2024 election with the rest being held by the Conservatives.

In the map below you can see MRP results for individual constituencies, highlighting seats held by each party and seats which switched hands at the recent elections. You can see these same results in the table below.

Methodology

A 20,000 person survey was conducted by FocalData in the week of the 1st July 2024. MRP (Multilevel Regression with Post-stratification) was used to analyse demographic trends and therefore establish an indicative result for each Parliamentary constituency. This is fundamentally the same technique that is regularly used to derive seat-level estimates of voting intention. It is not a perfect representation of opinion on every proposed housing development - there may be super local factors at play that MRP polling can't capture - but gives you a general sense of an area's disposition based on its demographic make-up.
